Sit! Stay! Smile!
As an exclusive offer for WARL, three-time Pulitzer
Prize winning photojournalist, Carol Guzy, volunteered
a Sunday in December to shoot exquisite, signed pet
portraits for WARL supporters. All of the revenue was
donated to WARL's animal rescue efforts. Carol is a
passionate WARL and animal rescue enthusiast, and we
are deeply grateful for her kind and generous
assistance. Please watch our website for future
opportunities to have your beloved animals
immortalized by this talented and compassionate
photographer.
Positively Well Behaved Dogs
WARL now offers a range of positive reinforcement
dog training classes—everything from puppy
socialization to agility skills—for WARL's canine
alumni and the general public. Class tuition is
deliberately kept affordable ($150 for six sessions) to
encourage people to train their dogs using the most
modern, humane, and effective methods. For
information on class schedule and availability, please
visit our website, www.warl.org, or contact Behavior
and Training Manager Mary Bayless at 202-726-2556,
ext. 320 or training@warl.org.
Happy Trails, Angie
Many of you reading this
remember Angie Watts as the
helpful and cheerful WARL
staffer who united you with the
dog that now shares your life.
During her 5-year tenure at
WARL, Angie found homes
for hundreds of dogs. As if
that were not enough, Angie
instituted and guaranteed the
success of many of WARL's core programs:
ShARE, the Love Fund, the volunteer program, etc.
Her legacy at WARL is huge, and she shall always be
remembered here as one of the best and most
dedicated of employees. And if they ever publish a
Who's Who of Animal Rescue, we expect to see Angie's
face on the cover. Angie is expecting a baby later this
spring.
Quesadilla as Quarterback
Again this year,WARL
animals appeared on
Animal Planet's Puppy
Bowl to encourage shelter
adoptions. Most of the puppies in the bowl and all of the kittens in the halftime show were WARL
rescues. Our Quesadilla, a 3-month husky mix, nearly
received the Most Valuable Puppy designation from the
Bowl's 7 million viewers, but a mixed shepherd named
Bomber edged by him in the 11th hour. WARL raises a
rousing cheer to these talented animals for spreading
the word about animal adoption.
"Now, an exclusive interview with Buddy!"
Thanks to WTOP reporter Kristi King, 52 WARL
animals a year have their moment of fame before they
are even adopted. In fact, their moment of fame is
intended to get them adopted. Kristi's delightful
profiles of homeless WARL animals for adoption air on
Saturday and Sunday morning. Thank you, Kristi from
all of us, but especially from Penny, Sinclair, Mars¡K
and hundreds of other animals whose lives are better
because you care.
Music to Our Ears
The Gay Men's Chorus of Washington invited WARL
dogs to make onstage appearances to promote
adoptions at each of their three holiday concert
performances. By way of this generous offer, a total of
3,000 people learned about WARL, our dogs, and the
rewards of adopting homeless animals. And the dogs
say "Encore, encore!"
Miracle on Oglethorpe Street
Public support for Presents
for Paws 2006 was immense,
filling the lobby with food,
toys, treats, and bedding for
animals belonging to lowincome
neighbors who could
not otherwise afford to
include their companions on
their holiday shopping list. Thanks
to all who so graciously donated. You deserve the
credit for all that purring and all those wagging tails.
Pasta for Pets
This year's all-you-can eat spaghetti dinner and
family game night sold out again and raised $2,500 for
WARL's Love Fund. Oodles of thanks to the WARL
Board of Directors for hosting the evening and to the
event's bighearted sponsors: Marshfield Associates,
Alexandria Animal Hospital, Buca di Beppo, Burson-
Marsteller, Best Buy, Trader Joe's, and Whole Foods
Market.
