As a result of the catastrophic events affecting the southern Gulf States, The Washington Animal Rescue League is responding to cries for help with a major rescue operation. This week, we have fielded many calls and e-mails from concerned supporters, asking whether we will be sending aid to animal shelters in hurricane-ravaged areas, and how they can contribute to our efforts. We thank you for your concern, and wanted to update you.

WARL is coordinating veterinary staff to fly down immediately to provide triage and emergency care. ShARE staff will follow in a 32-hour round-trip, bringing with them medical supplies, pet food, and water. The ShARE van is specially equipped with independent holding areas, each with its own air exchange and climate control. Rescued animals, recuperating from trauma, will find comfort in the van's blankets and first-aid medical equipment as they are transported back to WARL's privately funded DC shelter.

Shelters in the Gulf States are, as you can imagine, overcrowded as stray and abandoned animals flood in, and as a result, these shelters will be overburdened, short on resources, and in desperate need of relief. WARL will bring medical supplies, food, and water, and transport as many animals as we can back to the League.

This rescue effort, and treating the animals' inevitably severe medical conditions, will cost the League thousands of dollars, and we need your financial support. Your donation will be 100% designated to our ShARE (Shelter Animal Relief Effort) program, created in 2001 to respond to the needs of less fortunate animals in overcrowded shelters and animal victims of national disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. Here's how to donate, and a few other ways to get involved, as well:

How You Can Help:

  1. Make your secure, online donation Donate Now
In the space provided on the form under "My contribution," please indicate "Hurricane Katrina."
  2. ADOPT an animal. The League is in the midst of a building renovation, and is literally knocking down walls to create additional housing for the animals brought back from this natural disaster. If you've been thinking about adopting an animal, now would be the perfect time!
    .
  3. Donate your gently used blankets and towels to our shelter. They are always in need at the League, and will be in high demand now that more animals are on the way needing comfort
    .
