The Washington Animal Rescue League opened its Medical Center in 1996 to treat shelter animals and provide full-service, low-cost veterinary care to the pets of low-income neighbors. In 2007 WARL's Medical Center opened its doors to the general public as well. It now sees nearly 7,000 dogs and cats each year.

As one of the oldest and most comprehensive shelter-based hospitals, WARL’s Medical Center has become one of the country’s foremost teaching hospitals for shelter medicine.  Each year the center attracts dozens of veterinary student interns, who come from as far away as California and even abroad to study under WARL’s veterinarians.

What Services Are Available At The Medical Center?
The Medical Ceneter provides routine physical exams, vaccines, spaying and neutering, other surgeries, emergency care, dental work, and treatment of diseases and injuries.

The Medical Center holds a special low-cost vaccination and microchip clinic on the last Saturday of each month from 9:30 a.m. until noon. Vaccinations for rabies, canine distemper/parvovirus (DHPP), feline "distemper" (FVRCP), canine bordatella (“kennel cough”), and feline leukemia cost $10 each.   No appointments are necessary and there is no limit as to how many animals an individual can bring to the clinic.  Microchips are also available for $25.

Who Can Use the Medical Center?
Anyone with a dog or cat can make an appointment for their pet at the Medical Center. The normal rates are competitive with other veterinary practices in the area.

How Do I Qualify for Financial Assistance?
The Medical Center offers financial assistance to income-qualiified residents of the District of Columbia and Prince George's County, Maryland. If interested, you can call the clinic at 202-726-CARE for a means test. All clinic patients must be spayed or neutered, but the Medical Center can arrange to have this done free of charge for clients who qualify for financial assistance.

How do I contact the Medical Center?
Please call (202) 726-CARE for an appointment.

What Educational Opportunities Does the Medical Center Provide?
The Medical Center welcomes volunteers, veterinary students, and veterinary externs. For more information, call, 202-726-2556.
